Secure future for Cherry Tree Nursery

The future of Bournemouth ’s Cherry Tree Nursery, which provides sheltered work opportunities for adults with mental health problems, has been secured.

Bournemouth Council has granted a 21-year-lease to the charity project at Northbourne, allowing the Nursery to apply and access funding to address the poor state of the buildings on the site.

Previously the project which was set up in 1990 had been subject to three-year reviews of its licence which was considered too short term for other sources of funding to be granted. As a result many of the nursery’s temporary buildings are now in a state of disrepair.

The charity is now looking forward to a more secure future.

Councillor John Beesley, Portfolio holder for Resources, said: “I am delighted we have been able to secure the future of Cherry Tree Nursery. This is a marvellous project which has helped a huge number of people over the years. We are very pleased to have been able to assist with the granting of a longer term lease when the charity needs some support. Through this they are can access much needed funding to improve the nursery’s facilities for the long term.”

Councillor Anne Filer, Portfolio Holder for Economy and Tourism, said: “Cherry Tree Nursery is one of Bournemouth ’s gems and thoroughly deserves the chance to continue the good work it has been doing. Through granting of a longer term lease they have the opportunity to build on their current achievements and continue to provide excellent working opportunities and successful retail operation.”

Jessica Davies, Nursery Manager, Cherry Tree Nursery, said: “We are thrilled at the Council’s decision to grant us a longer term lease which allows us to fulfil our hopes for the site including addressing the poor state of our buildings. At the moment our facilities leak, are difficult to heat and floors, walls and doors are failing making our work very difficult. Now we can truly aim for the facilities our volunteers deserve. It is our 20th birthday in April and it is wonderful to think we will be marking it knowing we are secure for another 20 years.”
